The Great Debate: Huggies vs. Pampers

Choosing the right diaper for your child is one of the first and most important decisions a new parent can make. In my opinion this is one item you should not skimp on price, because the generic brands really are an inferior product. They really do not wick away moisture, and you will end up changing the diapers more frequently, essentially spending more money.

So the battle comes down to the two Goliath’s: Huggies vs Pampers. Both are great products, & have advantages, but if you look into the details though there really is only one choice for my wife & I, we are a Pampers family!

The quality of the diapers are very close, I have tried both with my children, as well as my sisters three kids over the years. I have noticed that the Huggies have resulted in more blowouts than Pampers. This is my experiences with five children and numerous others I have baby sat for over the past twenty years.

Most people will argue go with Huggies, they are cheaper and essentially the same product. I beg to differ, although the retail price of Huggies is cheaper, Pampers offers coupons, and discount codes that are more attractive to and bring the price below those of Huggies. Pampers also offers a Gifts to Grow Program where clients can enter rewards codes for awesome gifts.

I have been very happy with our diaper decision, and Love the Pampers brand. My questions for all the Great Dads & Moms are:

Great Dads & Moms what is your go to diaper brand?

Why do you go with that brand, and would anything sway your decision?

  • We were a pampers family. We tried every diaper imaginable and only found one diaper that was “almost” as good. The Target brand diapers was a descent generic diaper in comparison. I never liked Huggies (same reason you mentioned…blow outs). You might “think” you are paying more for the Pampers but with the Gifts to Grow program, coupons and various sales you aren’t. PLUS you are using less diapers than I ever did from other brands.

    • Thanks for sharing Aaron, I keep hearing that Huggies is the brand of choice for dads, I’m not sure that is the case. We are very loyal to the Pampers brand, our Babies bottoms are important to us.

  • We are a Pampers family all the way. My parents buy the generic cheap ones, and if they are watching the kids they use them. Sometimes they come home with one on still and they do not even compare to the Pampers! Our first child is out of diapers, and our second is almost out of the Easy Ups. Can’t wait for that day, cause the next time ill be buying diapers after that will be for myself when I’m much older.

    • I agree the baby I sit for uses the no frills brand and they seem like sandpaper to me. They cannot be comfortable to a baby.

  • I always went by the rule that I don’t skimp on 2 things when it comes to buying name brands: Orange Juice and toilet paper. Now the first (although Tropicana blows any generic OJ out of the water) is irrelevant, but the latter is not. You can not skimp on quality when it comes to the hind quarters. That is why we were a Pampers family for my first son, and will be for our second. The biggest reason is the quality. We’ve used both, swapping out occasionally when there was a great deal, but Pampers is more absorbent, sturdier and just a better feel on the body than Huggies. I think we may have used Huggies for the swimmer diapers, but, when it comes to daytime, nighttime, cruisers and pull-ups it was Pampers all the way. They feel stronger to the touch, but still soft and they come through when they need to. Now, sometimes there’s nothing any diaper can do…..but, when the going gets tough, Pampers held up better than Huggies, and, like I said, you don’t skimp on the hind quarters!

    • I also equate a bad diaper to bad toilet paper. You know how uncomfortable it feel when you use generic TP, imaging your baby feeling at way for a couple of years. Huggies is getting no love over here so far, their customers swear by the product as well

  • I am very passionate about brands that I love and hate, from day one I was Pampers all the way. For my shower we received a variety of diapers, including Huggies and Pampers,it was a good thing we went through the Huggies so quickly because I couldn’t wait to get rid of them. Pampers were the diapers that were used in the hospital when both of my kids were born and I wouldn’t consider another brand. Not only that but there are always Pampers coupons available online for both wipes and diapers. I also love that just about every box of diapers comes with P&G coupon books. I am also a huge fan of the Gifts to Grow rewards program, with two in diapers we rack those points in. I have used our points for a number of things including birth announcements and photo calendars. I can’t stress enough how Pampers is superior to Huggies!

  • We use Pampers, they are the best by far in my opinion. High quality, no leakage, worth the few extra bucks.

    • Lots of Loyal Customers of Pampers in my audience. tell me what you think of this? I’ve been hearing a lot of people on Facebook telling me they use the cloth diapers from Costco. I did not expect that kind of response, but it was quite a few. It seems time consuming, and very unhealthy to me

  • With three kids, I have tried every diaper on the market (except for cloth…no thanks), and must agree Pampers is the best out there. With the first child we went Pampers all the way but than with two in diapers we tried to go cheaper with the Huggies. You end up going through more of them, and as everyone is saying if you clip your coupons you can actually end up paying less for Pampers than the no frills brands.

  • This Dad rolls with Pampers! Plain and simple noooo blowouts! They also offer up pamper points which are good for all sort of different redemptions!

    • Yeah we have enough points for a few things. I’ve got my eye on that chuggington train set, but I’m sure the wifey has her own reward picked out

Cloth diapers. More environmentally friendly, more sanitary, more useful around the house, and helps make potty training easy. Anything you think you can do with disposables and not cloth? You’re wrong.

    • I think too many people are grossed out by the thought even though it’s not very different other than washing. I completely forgot about the carbon footprint aspect.

We don’t even do the washing!! There is a service that delivers them to our door on a weekly basis, and takes the soiled diapers.

  • We were not militant about the brand but generally found Huggies to be more absorbant, especially the night time version for our very active boy. Though we also found “Kirkland” brand to be close. We probably used Huggies 75% of the time.

    • There’s some love for Huggies! I hear good things about their night time diapers, and wipes as well. A lot of people use Kirkland I’ve been finding. It looks like Luvs is the big loser of the group so far

  • We Started off with Pampers Swaddlers because they had the pee line and being new parents we were worried about being able to tell if Nate had gone to the bathroom. When he outgrew them we went to pampers cruisers because Nate was prone to rashes. After that, we moved onto Kirkland and CVS. I thought it was Target brand but Cathy corrected me.

    • I forgot about the pee line that turns blue. I think that’s why I loved them so much at first. It’s pretty much all our kids have known

  • We have been a Pampers family from day 1. I’m thinking the hospital even used Pampers. We tried Huggies once for whatever reason and I remember they used to leave red marks on my son’s legs at elastics and that was the end of that.

    • I think Pampers has the hospital market cornered. I’m sure a lot of parents choose them just for that reason. My sisters kids used all different types so I remember the huggies blowouts. We have always been happy with Pampers

  • We actually use the Costco brand, which works well. We also have always chosen Huggies over Pampers when going for brand name.

I agree that generic brands can be awful I.e. Target…they aren’t even cut the same way as the other diapers which makes containing things a bit if a problem…

    • Out of curiosity what is the Costco diaper name? I was surprised at the amount of Kirkland diapers as a parents choice

  • Thanks for sharing Tim, I was very surprised to learn that a lot of parents use cloth diapers. Was your choice based upon environmental concerns?

  • Hate Huggies, but Pampers and Luvs are pretty equal in absorbency in my opinion. but Pampers smells better. The Costco brand, Kirkland .is my favorite choice. Right now though my daughter is too big for the 1-2 but not big enough for the 3 so Pampers to tide us over till then.

Targets Up&Up is the worst!! Could smell when my daughter peed and the welts around her poor legs! Horrible!
