The Jets need two things to start 2013 on the right foot. A new QB and a new coach, should be top priority for the new GM and the answers are simple: Alex and Lovie Smith.
The only QB in the league to play under more scrutiny than Mark Sanchez, is former first round pick Alex Smith. He was mocked by the fans, and even his own coaches. He came within one play of making the Super Bowl last year and is very secure with the ball. Believe it or not the Jets were only a few turnovers away from making the playoffs. The team clearly quit on the QB, and a switch should have been made after the Seahawks game in November. Alex Smith has proved that he can lead a team to a championship, and that he can handle media pressure as a former number one pick. He didn’t lose his starting job because of inconsistent play, but an injury. He is fit for the offense if they can make a tweak on the offensive line that still has three former Pro Bowl players.
The second key to turning this franchise around is a new coach. Lovie Smith is one of the best in the game and has to be looked at as a replacement to Rex Ryan. The players quit on Ryan and the offense, and he needs to be held responsible for the demise of the team two years in a row. His brash attitude style has come back around to bite him and its time for new blood now that Smith is available. This can be turned around quickly with a couple of moves, and Smith should be the guy leading the way. I know Woody Johnson has said Ryan is safe, but you got to at least give Smith a call, he is an upgrade at the coaching position, regardless of the Bears missing the playoffs.
I’m sure that the Jets will make all the wrong choices because they are the Jets. They will keep everything the same and draft a dud. Something tells me it going to be some time until I see a Jets playoff game. Good thing we paid for that PSL.

January 3, 2013 at 9:13 amWhen you’re THE first pick of the draft, of course he’s playing under scrutiny…as he should be. And while Alex Smith might be a better choice than Mark Sanchez, I can’t back you on the claim that he’s championship caliber since he has no championships and his own team has decided their best chance to win is with a QB other than Mr. Smith (due to the new guy’s play not because Alex is hurt). I don’t think Smith trash but I wouldn’t rest my championship hopes on the guy.
As far as Lovie goes, it’s still too soon for me…My Bears completely choked and I’m not sure how to feel about him right now.

Problem is – All three will be expensive, you have to pay Ryan and Sanchez and of course the salary cap hit. Don’t see it happening
